We Are All Having Fun Here

Where do ideas come from? I'm not sure I've ever really cared much about this question. Is it my lack of curiosity or just a belief that we can never really know the answer?

But this time, this story, I can tell you began in a minivan on a Canadian highway more than thirty years ago. It was the first summer I started to believe in myself as a writer. The first summer I heard Lyle Lovett and his song about a boat. The first summer my heart ached for an absent beloved and the first summer I thought I understood infidelity. It started there, but it carried on through a life in New York and my proximity to writers who would become famous. You may not detect any of that in this story, but that's the magic of fiction. Thank you to Sunspot for publishing We Are All Having Fun Here and awarding it the Editor's Prize.
